July 30, 1938 – April 24, 2025
As we reflect on the passing of Jerry A. Petersen, who left us on April 24, 2025, at age 86, our hearts are filled with both deep sadness and profound gratitude. For those of us at Petersen & Petersen, Jerry wasn’t just a partner in his final working years—he was the heart and soul of everything we strive to be, both as lawyers and as people.
After earning his law degree from The Ohio State University College of Law and being sworn into the Ohio bar in 1966, Jerry found his calling when he returned to Geauga County in 1967. What followed was more than fifty years of legal excellence that transformed not just our community’s legal landscape but the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jerry’s early years as Geauga County Prosecutor from 1967 to 1973 revealed the character that would define his entire career—fairness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to doing what’s right. Even while serving as a prosecutor, he maintained a private practice, showing the work ethic and dedication that would inspire generations of attorneys.
His 37-year partnership at Petersen & Ibold wasn’t just professionally successful—it was built on genuine relationships and mutual respect. Jerry earned a preeminent rating practicing in courts throughout Ohio, but what clients and colleagues remember most is how he made them feel heard, valued, and protected.
Jerry’s legal expertise spanned more than a dozen areas of law, from criminal defense and personal injury to real estate and maritime law. His 2017 Legacy Award from the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce recognized decades of contributions to the legal profession. Still, Jerry’s true legacy lives in the countless people he helped, mentored, and inspired along the way.
When Jerry joined us at Petersen & Petersen to work alongside his son, Todd, and daughter-in-law, Susan, he brought not just decades of legal wisdom but also the warmth and genuine care that made him such a beloved father and grandfather. His smile lit up a room, and he showed us that the best lawyers aren’t just skilled advocates—they’re people who never forget that behind every case is a human story that matters.
Jerry had a gift for making everyone feel important, whether you were a client facing the biggest challenge of your life or a young attorney just starting. He believed that practicing law was about more than winning cases—it was about serving others with compassion and integrity.
Thank you, Jerry, for showing us not only what it truly means to be a great lawyer but also an even better person.
