Leadership Is an Invitation

Sometimes leadership reveals itself in the smallest moments.
While visiting Dublin, Susan Petersen reached out to David Barniville, President of Ireland’s High Court and a fellow member of the International Society of Barristers. The expectation was simple: perhaps a brief coffee, a conversation, and an opportunity to reconnect.
Instead, his response was immediate.
“Bring everyone.”
With those two words, a casual meeting became something much more meaningful.
What followed was an evening at Dublin’s historic Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club, where lawyers and judges from both sides of the Atlantic gathered for hours of conversation. The discussion moved easily from courtroom advocacy and trial strategy to public service, professional responsibility, Ireland, America, and the challenges that accompany a life in the law.
The setting was memorable. The people were exceptional.
But the most lasting impression came from something far simpler: generosity.
In a profession often defined by achievement, titles, and accomplishment, it is easy to overlook the importance of inclusion. Yet the strongest leaders understand that leadership is not about limiting access. It is about creating opportunity. It is about opening doors, sharing perspective, and making room for others.
The legal profession has always been built upon relationships, mentorship, and the exchange of ideas across generations. The lessons that shape careers are often learned not in courtrooms, but around tables where experience is shared, questions are welcomed, and different perspectives are encouraged.
That evening in Dublin served as a reminder of those values.
Although separated by geography and different legal systems, the lawyers gathered that night shared a common commitment: serving clients with integrity, pursuing justice, and continually striving to improve the profession.
Those conversations reinforced something we believe deeply at Petersen & Petersen. Great lawyers never stop learning. Great leaders never stop teaching. And the most respected professionals are often the most generous with their time and wisdom.
Thank you to David Barniville and Imogen McGrath for their hospitality, warmth, and example.
Sometimes the best lessons in leadership begin with a simple invitation:
“Bring everyone.”
